Hi, I’m LuAnn for About.com. Today I’ll show you how to adjust some basic settings on your iPhone 4.

Set the iPhone to Connect to WiFi

To connect to Wifi, select the settings button. Now tap Wifi. The phone will list nearby networks. Choice your network. Enter the passcode and tap “join.” If you’ve connected successfully, you will see a small check next to your network’s name

Access Your E-Mail on the iPhone

To add an email account, select the mail button. Choice the appropriate mail service and enter your user information and save the account. Your iPhone will verify the information and add your email account. You can check that the account has been added by again selecting the mail button. The iPhone should now load your emails.

Change the iPhone Display

To change your phone’s wallpaper. Go to settings, tap on wallpaper, you can choose one of Apple’s images or select one from your camera roll. Choice the desired image, tap the “Set” button. You can set the image for the lock screen, home screen, or both. Now when you wake your phone from sleep, you will see the new image.

Create a Passcode for Your iPhone

To enable a passcode on your phone, go to settings, general, choice “passcode lock,” and “turn passcode on.” Enter a 4 digit code, then you’ll be prompted to re-enter the code. To check, simply lock you phone or put it to sleep. You will be prompted to enter the passcode when you wake your phone.

Adjust Settings to Save Battery Power on the iPhone

To help your battery last longer, you can decrease the brightness of your phone. Go to settings, select brightness and slide to lower your phone’s brightness. If you are traveling (and not using the internet), you can also disable the 3G to save your battery. Go to settings, general, network, and next to “Enable 3G” tap the button to turn off. Be sure to back up your phone often. Make sure you always have the most up to date version of iTunes, and software for your phone.
