Transcript:Tips for Choosing a First Person Shooter

Hi, I'm Nick and for About.com I'm going to list all the features you need to consider when purchasing a first person shooter game.

Action Themes are Popular in First Person Shooter Games

Single player campaigns tend to be short with action taking priority over narrative. On the positive side, this means that elements such as graphics and sound are high quality, with each game trying to stand out from the rest. Variety is something you won’t find much of in FPS games, with popular themes repeating themselves over and over again. War scenarios in particularly have been popular since the genre’s invention, as seen by the Medal of Honor series. Famous for intense atmospheres and set piece missions, the Medal of Honor series has been around for a number of years and is always a safe choice for those looking for a guaranteed blockbuster. Medal of Honor is available on a number of platforms, including PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. On a similar vein to Medal of Honor is the Call of Duty Series. Call of Duty: Black Ops grossed $131.6 million in its first week of sales alone. These war games offer weapons realistic to their time period and a number of genuine locations and historic events.

Strategy, Fantasy and Horror are Included in Several Game Narratives

For a different take on the war theme, you might want to consider look in at games such as the Halo and Resistance series’ for Xbox and PlayStation. These games have alternative takes on war, offering futuristic worlds, enemies and weaponry.

Moving away from war completely, other first person shooter games put more focus onto things such as atmosphere and narrative. Games such as Bioshock 2 are as thought provoking as they are fun to play, offering the player moral choices which impact on the story as they progress further. F.E.A.R 3 edges further towards horror, offering shocks and scares as the player struggles to survive.

If fighting isn’t your thing, you can always pick up a copy of “Portal 2’, which see’s the player solving increasingly difficult puzzles through the use of a teleportation device. Famous for its dark humor and well-written script, the Portal series offers a challenging experience that requires creative thinking and speed of thought.

First Person Shooter Games Offer Multi-Player Action

The great thing about FPS games is that they lend themselves perfectly to multi-player format. Gamers can either work collaboratively through missions, or compete against one another for the highest scores. Competitive events include death matches, capture the flag or control points, all of which add to the life of a game exponentially. With so many games out there, it can be tough to choose which one suits you best. Remember that the principles of each game will remain the same, so it’s simply a case of finding the game you like the most! For more video game information, visit About.com.
