Transcript:10 Best MMORPG's for PC
Hi, I'm Shane Murphy, your technology Guru for About.com. Today, we'll quickly preview an array of different MMORPG's on the market right now.
Best MMORPG's: World of Warcraft and City of Heroes
The biggest deserves to go first: World of Warcraft offers hundreds of hours of fantasy inspired gameplay, allowing you to team up with friends, to form guilds, hone your profession, conquer dragons, challenge other players and much more. WoW has an impressive array of ancillary media surrounding it too, thanks to its roots in the Warcraft universe. Whether its card games, books, other video games, even conventions, World of Warcraft represents plenty of commitment. If you're looking for something outside of the fantasy genre, you may enjoy the superhero setting. City of Heroes offers a superb comic book-esque take on the MMO genre with wholly new universes and conflicts that will feel very familiar to Marvel and DC fans. This MMO specializes in character creation and power specialization.
Best MMORPG's: Star Wars: Old Republic and DC Universe Online
If you're a fan of the Star Wars universe, then you may want to wait for upcoming Star Wars: Old Republic, set to be released this Christmas season. Level up as a Jedi in the Galactic Republic or an evil-doer in the Sith Empire to destroy your enemies and discover new corners of the galaxy, all while bumping into familiar settings and characters from the famous films and novels. Another solid MMORPG based on an existing franchise is DC Universe Online. Here you can create and customize your hero and then join up with other super-powered players to take down famous DC villains and explore locations like Metropolis.
Best MMORPG's: Planetside and EVE Online
If you're still looking for something sci-fi and hi-tech but don't want anything from an existing IP, you could try Planetside, a triple-faction based game where you employ hi-tech vehicles and guns to crush your opponents. You still level up your character, but the game is primarily a first person shooter. Sticking with sci-fi but totally different gameplay, you could play EVE Online if you want to try a space flight simulator. Select and upgrade your favorite type of space ship and engage in massive space wars while fighting for your side's political goals. A more cerebral game through and through, EVE even implemented an in-game system of democracy that's worth looking into.
Best MMORPG's: Fallen Earth and World of Tanks
Although much more rare, there are even modern era MMORPG's that you can indulge in if you want to stay grounded in the present. In Fallen Earth, you fight mutants and other wastelanders in a post-apocalyptic Grand-Canyon. Side with a faction, level up your character, and try to survive while collecting rewards for exploring every nook and cranny. There are a whole slew of free to play MMORPG's out there to consider too. For World War II buff, the wildly popular World of Tanks may hit the spot. Here you'll customize your dream tank to head out on missions and destroy your opponents.
Best MMORPG's: Pirates of the Burning Sea and Genesis AD
One of the only swashbuckling MMO's out there, Pirates of the Burning Sea lets you cruise around 18th century Caribbean in search of treasure and pirate fame. The game primarily is based around naval battles, but you can sword fight as well. If you're looking for a first person shooter, then try Genesis AD, a sci-fi based run and gun by Queen's Soft. Beyond just better guns, you can upgrade your character with things like rocket boosters and EMP devices.
