Transcript:How to Decorate a Princess-Themed Kids' Room
Hi! This is Cindy Kunz for About.com, and today, we're going to talk about decorating a princess-themed room. Now, I like to keep things simple and inexpensive when I'm designing with a theme. It's because the fairy princess theme might change into a soccer theme, might turn into an interest in botany, so you never know. So don't spend a lot of money, but be very creative. It's a lot of fun!
Design Around One Princess-Themed Item
When trying to create a theme, I usually start with an inspiration piece. Usually it's around the bed. And I did find this pillow, which I think is really pretty. It's not too juvenile, it says princess to me, and I thought it was really nice. Let's get started with the rest of the room.
This really sweet pillow led me to figure out what to do with bedding. Now when I was out looking around, I did see things that had crowns and princesses on them, but I decided to go for something a little softer, a little less specific. I found a really pretty pillow sham with ruffles on it that I thought was nice and simple, and still said princess to me. And I always use a down comforter on a kids bed - I think it's really versatile. You can use it straight up, or you can get a white duvet cover for that.
Include Princess-Themed Fabrics
Since we have so much texture going on here, I thought it would be nice to bring that idea in for the curtains. I found a very filmy, very princess-y fabric, that has a little bit of texture, a little bit of crinkle, and I thought these would be perfect for the curtains. Now for the walls, I think I'd choose a really pale, powdery pink, that would look really pretty with this. But I also found this pretty amazing wallpaper - it has a little bit of a shine to it, and that says princess to me.Now this is a really nice carpet I'm going to use for the floor - it's a little bit of a short shag, which is so soft and plush.
Include Storage in the Princess Design
Everyone knows a kid needs storage - even a little princess needs a place to put her jewels and things. So I found this pretty little pink basket - it has a removable and washable canvas liner. You can go ahead and wash it if it gets dirty.I think I would finish this room off with a wall full of collected mirrors. You could go to thrift stores, different places over time with your daughter, and collect these little fancy mirrors. You can paint them, put them on the wall and really, really look special.
