Hi, I'm Dr. Ingrid Rodi and I am a specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility with RodiMD.com. Today I am here on behalf of About.com to give you tips for increasing fertility.
Quit Smoking to Increase Fertility
I advise patients to see their health care provider before attempting pregnancy. This consultation is called preconception counseling. It will help you get off to a good start. During that visit, any medical conditions (such as diabetes, thyroid disease, high blood pressure, and anemia) can be reviewed and treatment optimized. The most important thing you can do for your fertility is not to smoke tobacco, or marijuana for that matter. Smoking not only decreases the chance of getting pregnant, but it is terrible for the fetus. You are going to have to stop smoking sooner or later. What better time than when you are making plans for the next generation?
Be Healthy to Increase Fertility
The next thing you can do is to be a healthy weight. We know that women who are over- or underweight have a harder time getting pregnant, are more likely to miscarry, and have more complications during pregnancy. Women should aim for a BMI between 20 and 25. Women, remember to take your prenatal vitamins, particularly the folic acid. You don't have to stop drinking alcohol until you are pregnant. However, you should not have more than one drink per day, and then only 3-4 times a week. Men can have up to two drinks per day.
Tips for Increasing Fertility for Men
Men should make sure that they remain "cool down there." We know that long bicycle rides, hot tubs, and tight underwear can decrease sperm quality in some men. Evaluate your work environment. Do you work with toxic chemicals? Is it very hot? If you have any worries, ask your health care provider.
Have Sex Regularly to Increase Fertility
Finally, don't forget to have sex. If you are having sex at least three times a week and it is not a chore, you are fine. If, however, you would like to have sex less frequently and still have a good chance of getting pregnant, use an ovulation prediction kit. These are available without prescription at the pharmacy. Follow the instructions carefully and you will know when to have sex.
