Hi, I'm Dr. Ingrid Rodi and I am a specialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility with RodiMD.com. Today I am talking to you on behalf of About.com about symptoms of infertility.
Most couples suspect that they might have a fertility problem when they have been attempting pregnancy for more than a year. If I get a chance, I suggest to couples who are considering pregnancy that they meet with their gynecologist or nurse practitioner for preconception counseling. That way, some impediments to becoming pregnant can be picked up even before the couple starts trying.
Abnormal Cycles Are a Symptom of Infertility
Questions a woman should ask herself are: are my cycles regular? Regular cycles come every month If the interval from the first day of one cycle to the first day of the second cycle is less than 24 days, or longer than 35, that can be a sign of a problem with ovulation. A woman should be evaluated even before she attempts pregnancy.
Pelvic Infection Is a Symptom of Infertility
Do I have a history of a Chlamydia or gonorrhea pelvic infection? Pelvic infections can lead to blockage of the fallopian tubes. A woman who is considering pregnancy should discuss this history with her healthcare provider. Scarring of the fallopian tubes can also increase the woman's chance of having an ectopic pregnancy, which is a serious condition.
Age Can Be a Symptom of Infertility
Am I over 35 years of age? Women are less fertile as they get older. Some women are quite fertile at 35, and others are much less so. During preconception counseling, some testing can be done to get an idea of how fertile a woman is. A woman in her late 30s or 40s should not wait until she has been trying for a year to be evaluated. Is my weight normal for my height? A woman who is either too thin or overweight can have problems getting pregnant and may be at greater risk of miscarriage.
Symptoms of Infertility in Men
Does my partner have impotence or trouble ejaculating inside of me? A normal chance of pregnancy assumes that the couple can have sex three times a week without difficulty. If a couple is having difficulty having sex, they should not wait a year to consult a specialist.
