Hi! I'm Inna Topiler Mooney for About.com, talking about way to get rid of gas and bloating.

Whether it's occasional or chronic, having gas and bloating can be very uncomfortable to deal with. Luckily, there are ways you can minimize the chance of getting these conditions and also things you can do to alleviate the problem if you have it.

Foods that can cause Gas and Bloating

There are some foods that can cause gas and bloating and these foods can be divided into 2 categories:

  • General gas producing foods
  • Foods that a person may be allergic or sensitive to

Foods that generally produce gas for many people are:

  • Asparagus
  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Brussell Sprouts
  • Cauliflower
  • Legumes
  • Peas

Many people aren't able to digest these foods, which is why gas is produced. One easy tip is to cook these foods well, which will help in digestion. Also, supplements such as Beano can greatly help to reduce gas.

Food Allergens

Food sensitivities play a huge role in gas production. While every person may have allergies or sensitivities to different foods, some of the main allergens are:

  • Gluten (found in wheat, rye, barley and oats)
  • Dairy products
  • Corn
  • Soy

There are various tests that can determine if these foods are sensitivities. If you suspect an allergen or sensitivity is possible, check with your healthcare provider or nutritionist for further evaluation.

Gas and bloating can also be caused by overgrowth of bad bacteria and yeast in the intestines.

Alternative Ways to get Rid of Gas and Bloating

Other things you can do to reduce or eliminate gas and bloating is to:

  • Make sure you drink plenty of water (6-8 8 oz glasses minimum)
  • Exercise. Any type of low impact cardio like walking, biking, elliptical or light jogging is helpful to move things around in the intestines will help pass things along.
  • Stretching or yoga can also be helpful to release gas.
