Hi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today we're answering the question, what is human resources management?

About Human Resources Management

Human resources management is the function within an organization that focuses on the recruitment of, the management of, the providing direction for the employees in that organization.

More About Human Resources Management

Human resources managers generally have a bachelor's degree, some experience as a supervisor, excellent communication skills, and extreme levels of professionalism. You can, as an employee, feel comfortable taking your questions and concerns to a human resources manager. Human resources management is about understanding and relating to employees as individuals, understanding their individual needs and career goals. It's also about creating a positive work environment, somewhere that's constructive and productive.

Additional Facts About Human Resources Management

Human resources managers will identify areas that suffer from lack of knowledge in certain areas, and provide remedies and solutions. They might offer workshops and trainings that employees can attend to better that situation. Human resources management is about accountability. Recruiting required workforce, making provisions for expressed and promised payroll benefits, and implementing strategies so you keep that competitive advantage.

Finally, it's about empowering the organization, meeting strategic goals and managing staff effectively. Human resources management - or HRM as you will sometimes see it - is not just a business practice, but an innovative and effective academic theory. Several universities offer courses that focus on HRM and broader fields.
