Hi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today we're discussing how to show employees appreciation through positive words.

The Workplace Should Reflect Positivity and Appreciation

Remember that there's nothing wrong with the good old standard terms of appreciation. Saying please and thank you go a long way. Thank your employee, your co-worker for something they've done, and say please if they're helping you.

It's not just being polite that creates a positive workspace, but there are other positive words you can use. You can ask employees how their weekend was, how their day is going, how are you doing on that project - but without getting into logistics or statistics. Just ask them how they're feeling today.

Be Sincere When Complimenting and Showing Appreciation

Repeated negative words can last a lifetime, but positive words - and using them repeatedly in the workplace - can do the same thing. It might help instill self-respect and confidence with your employee, which will make them a happier person, and a happier worker.

You can't just say the words. You also have to mean them. Make sure not only what you're saying is true, but use the same tone of voice. Take the time, take a breath before you praise or compliment that person and share those positive words, and make sure that it sounds honest and truthful.

Having trouble coming up with those words? I'll help you with the beginning of a couple of sentences, and hopefully you can fill in the blanks. How about: Thank you for… I appreciate the… I love when… Fill in the blanks and you'll be fine! Greater happiness in the workplace often leads to greater openness and cooperation, improves communication and increases production.
