Transcript:How to Motivate Employees With Recognition

Hi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for, and today we're discussing how to motivate employees with recognition.

Why Recognition Motivates Employees

Recognition is a way of saying thank you, and in the workplace, that's very important. You, as a manager, need to take the time purposefully out of your schedule to say thank you to your employees. An employee with healthy self-esteem is a better worker. Think about the goals and behaviors that you want to encourage in your employees. Be specific when thanking, recognizing your employees, when making that goal or showing that behavior. And if it's more than one employee, make sure that it's fair and consistent.

Be Specific When Recognizing Employees

We've all heard of employee of the month programs, but sometimes that's not the best way to go. You want to be specific when recognizing employees; you want to recognize them for a specific task or action, and not be general, generalizing a whole month's work. If you are going to have a recognition program that's current, consistent, that everyone knows about all the time and is trying to reach, set guidelines that everyone can follow. Guidelines must be the same for the lowest person on the chain and on the highest. You'll have to find what those employees have in common so they can get the same recognition. Or you can have a tiered program that has different recognitions for different departments, or different areas of work in the same company.

Make Employee Motivation Public or Private

You can choose whether or not you want to make this a private or public affair. You can present that certificate, or letter, or e-mail one-on-one; but sometimes it's nice to do it in public. Perhaps there's an event coming up, a retreat, or some sort of benefit, an awards ceremony. You should have that well-thought out, so that everyone's included, everyone you'd like to give an award to is on the agenda for that day.
