Hi! This is Angela Lussier for About.com, and today we'll discuss how to dress business casual for women.

What's Business Casual?

Step one is to check out your employee handbook or reference a human resources manager or employee to find out what kind of dress code is acceptable in your workplace. Most large companies have their dress code posted on the company intranet or in a handbook. Small companies may have it posted on a bulletin board, or it may just be well known by the staff and managers.

Instructions for Dressing Business Casual for Women

If there are things that are a little bit in a grey area, it may be business casual or it may be a little too much on the casual side - use your best judgment. It's definitely okay to leave something home and wear something that's more business-like than be questioned and have something that needs to be addressed.

Dressing Business Casual for Women

The way you dress says a lot about you. So make sure that you dress for the position you want, not the position you have. If you want to be someone who's viewed as management material or could potentially move up the ranks, you want to position yourself in the minds of the decision makers so they know you're potentially someone who could be in a higher level position.

About Dressing Business Casual for Women

Make sure that you don't wear something to work that you might wear on the weekend. Just because the word casual is in the term business casual, it doesn't mean jeans, or flip-flops, or even a jean skirt or tank top. If it's something you'd wear out to the beach or out to the movies or to dinner with friends, chances are that it's not acceptable in a business setting.

The bottom line is to make sure your outfit doesn't distract people from your ability to do a good job. Make sure what you wear is a reflection of your dedication and devotion to getting the job done.
