Transcript:How to Develop a Workplace PolicyHi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today we're discussing how to develop your workplace policy.
Choosing to Develop a Workplace PolicyOnce you've decided that a workplace policy is necessary, you want to articulate the goal of that policy. You want to be specific and not use too many words and sentences. You should be clearly understood; you can never hope to address every situation.
Workplace PoliciesYou can find sample policies online that you can tweak to your company's needs. In many cases, you are not reinventing the wheel - there are tons of policies to choose from, you just need to make them specific to your company. And in some cases, you'll need to consult an employment law attorney. In such cases of labor law, you might need a little more help with the wording of those policies.
More Information About How to Develop a Workplace PolicyNow that you have goals and samples of your workplace policy, you want write the policy with simple, easy to understand words. You want the people reading it to understand it, as well as those who need to enforce it. As you write each paragraph of the policy, stop and ask 'what if' questions that employees might ask. Be sure that the policy is clear and easy to understand. And also ask for help when you've written your policy's draft - get some extra eyes to proofread it. Consider asking colleagues or employees that this policy will address.
Never underestimate the review and proofreading process. It's important not only that your policies are typed up, but that the employee understands them and can put them into action. Now that you've developed your workplace policy, it's time to distribute.
