Many washing machines are now much more efficient and require a newly formulated detergent to work with their efficiency. These new machines indicate that they are to be used only with HE detergent.
What is HE Laundry Detergent?
HE stands for HIGH EFFICIENCY. HE laundry detergent is highly concentrated and designed to sustain dirt pulled out of your clothes, while producing less suds. More suds would confuse the washing cycles of high efficiency machines, and would prevent your clothes from proper rinsing.
How can too many suds be a problem? It's the same reason you wouldn't ever put dishwashing liquid into your dishwasher or your jacuzzi.
Tips for Using HE Laundry Detergent
You may be wondering if you can just use less of a non-HE detergent, instead? The answer is "No." Stick to what the manufacturer recommends. Your machine will be happier and your clothes will be cleaner.
HE detergent is becoming more readily available and is on the shelves next to all the familiar detergents you've come to know and love. Just look for the "for high efficiency machines" or "HE" label and use the amount indicated for your washer.
