Transcript: Vegetable Juicer Buying Tips

Hi! I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com Home. Having your own fruit and veggie juicer is a great way to make delicious and fun drinks that are loaded with natural vitamins, but with so many options on the market, its hard to figure out which juicer to buy. So today I'm going to give you a few tips on things to consider when purchasing a new Juicer.

Check the Juicer Motors

One of the most important features to consider is the strength of the motor and the number of speeds the juicer has to offer. The best rule of thumb is to find a juicer with the most powerful motor you can find in your price range because a juicer with insufficient power will not only slow down or burn out over time, but the motor speed can also make it more difficult to process foods with a thicker skin or core.

In addition, different types of fruits and vegetables require different motor speeds, if you plan on juicing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, you will want to consider a juicer with more than one motor speed so you can juice everything from soft tomatoes to whole cucumbers with ease!

Consider the Juicer's Cleanup

The second most important feature is the design because this will determine the ease of cleanup, and may determine how often you use your juicer. Juicing machines have many parts where pulp and juice can accumulate, so if the juicer has a lot of small crevices or tight spaces, it will be more difficult, and consequently more time-consuming to clean. To reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning, look for a machine with smooth flowing exteriors and parts that are dishwasher safe.

Check the Juicer Feeding Tube

Next, double check the feed tube opening to ensure that it is wide enough to do the jobs you want. So to avoid having to spend extra time pulling out a cutting board, as a general rule of the thumb, the wider the opening for inserting your fruits and veggies, the better.

Consider the Juice Pulp Amount

To suit you personal taste, look at the size of the mesh holes in the filter basket. Juicers tend to differ greatly when it comes to the amount of pulp deposited into the final fruit or vegetable juice. Depending on how much pulp you like to drink, look for a mesh hole size that suits your personal taste.

Check the Juicer Noise Level

Finally, test the noise level of the motor before purchasing to make sure that the juicer isn't too loud to use prior to those early morning workouts!
