Transcript:How To Buy A Humidifier

Hi! I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com. Having a humidifier around the house not only improves the breathing environment in the home, but it can also reduce other effects of dry air. So, today I'm going to cover a few tips on things to consider when purchasing a new humidifier.

Humidifier Mist Temperatures

The first thing you need to determine is if you need a warm mist or a cold mist humidifier. If you are uncertain about whether a warm mist or cool mist humidifier is right for you, there are many humidifiers on the market today that offer both options.

Humidifiers and Room Size

Next, determine the size of room you are humidifying. For small rooms and bedrooms a humidifier designed for 700 square feet is generally adequate, however, be sure that the humidifier is not too large for the room as this can form condensation on the inside of the windows that can lead to bacteria and mold problems.

Rotating Spouts on Humidifiers

Another key feature to look for is a rotating spout. This way you can have the humidity shoot in whichever direction you want it to go in the room.

Humidifier Water Tanks

Other features, such as refilling and handling convenience and the size of the water tank are important to determine. If the tank is too large, it will may become too heavy to lift and difficult to refill. If the tank is too small, you will need to refill the water tank far too frequently. Find an appropriate size that is right for you.

Humidistat on Humidifiers

For safety, double check that the humidifier has a built-in humidistat that will regulate the amount of humidity in the air, and also check that the humidifier has a safety shut-off feature so that it never continues to operate after running out of water.

Humidifiers and Noise

Finally, make sure that the humidifier is quiet enough so you can sleep at night.
