Hi I'm Jen D'Amore for About.com and this video is all about what to look for in a front load washer.
Consider Physical Features When You Buy a Front Load Washer
As with any washer purchase, first consider your set up. What can your space accommodate? If you're putting them side by side, consider adding prop ups, so you don't have to bend as low every time you do a load. If planning on stacking them, make sure the dimensions of the washer and dryer match. You'll need to purchase a stacking kit that fits the two.
All those fancy new colors can be tempting, but consider their longevity. Styles and tastes change. When in doubt, go with a neutral tone that can withstand the changes of design trends and match just about anything.
Next, consider capacity. What size works best for your family's laundry needs? What is the drum made of? If it's metal, make sure it's non rusting stainless steel. The last thing you want is rust on your clothes.
Look at Efficiency When You Buy a Front Load Washer
Water temperature is one option to check into. You want to be able to do a cold water wash. You'll also want to have a cycle for delicates. But, how many extra fancy options and features do you really need? Do you need a steam feature? Ask around to see how effective it really is, and if it's worth paying extra for.
Higher drum speeds will take more water from the clothes in the spin cycle, saving energy when drying, so look into the rpm when comparison shopping. And last, but not least, check the safety rating of the appliances you're purchasing at the Consumer Product Safety Commission's website (CPSC.gov).
