Transcript:What Is Stainless Steel?
Hi I'm Jen D'Amore for About.com, and this video is all about stainless steel. What Is Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is the material of choice for many household objects and appliances. When properly cared for it can look great and last a really long time. It's hygienic, and won't change the flavor of your food. Stainless steel is also completely recyclable. But what is Stainless steel? Chromium added to steel makes it resist rust…so it will stain-less…but it's not stain-proof.Caring for Stainless Steel
Proper care of the stainless steel in your home, will make it last.Staining and rusting occur when food or other substances are left on the surface, trapping in moisture, so wiping it clean, and keeping it clean is the best way to care for it. It's good practice to wipe stainless steel cutlery immediately after use. Early cleaning means you won't have to break out any harsh cleansers. You can start with just water, or water with a little dish-washing detergent, on a rag.For fingerprints, glass cleaner or vinegar work great. Apply with a spray bottle, or just on a soft microfiber cloth. For deeper cleaning, use a commercial cleaner made specially for stainless steel. In general, it's best to always follow the direction of the grain and avoid any harsh abrasive cleaners to prevent scratching. You also never want to use bleach or ammonia. Once clean, a light coat of olive oil can be applied to the surface.
To remove any deposits or stuck on grime, start with the gentlest cleaning methods, and work your way up. You'd be surpassed at how effective even just soaking with warm water and a little detergent can be.
