Transcript: Washing Windows

Hi, I'm JJ Burkart for About.com Home. I'm going to show you how to wash your windows.

Window Washing Products

You can use a variety of products to wash your windows. I use a foaming spray because it doesn t run and I can control where the cleaner does or doesn t go. You can use a rag, a newspaper or paper towel to wipe the windows. I use paper towel because it doesn t leave any fibers or residue on my windows or my hands. You will need one towel to wash the window and another to wipe it dry.

Apply the Window Washing Cleaner

Spray the cleaner onto the window. Wipe in a circular motion-apply some pressure onto the window to pry loose any dirt or debris.

Dry the Windows

With a dry paper towel or rag, wipe the windows completely dry.

Washing Hard to Reach Windows

For second story windows that can't be reached from outside can be a challenge. I have casement windows that open to 90 degrees by pushing a special latch. This provides just enough room for me to fit my arm. I can wash about half of the window from this side. I can reach the other half by reaching out the other window. Never lean out of a window and always put safety first. Wipe all window ledges and trim.

Remove Window Debris

Use a razor blade to remove stuck on debris. In this case I am removing a drop of paint. Look at your windows from several angles and if you see a streak or spot, use a small amount of cleaner and wash and wipe it again.
