Transcript:How to Strip Wax Buildup Off Tile

Hi! I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com!

Why It's Important to Strip Wax Buildup Off Tile Flooring

Tile kitchen floors can become dull and dirty looking due to wax buildup over time. So today, I'm going to show you how to strip the wax buildup from a tile floor in just a few easy steps.

Supplies to Strip Wax Buildup Off a Tile Floor

For this task, you will need:
  • a garbage can with a clean garbage bag
  • a squeegee
  • a dust pan
  • a large bucket
  • a mop
  • a stiff scrubbing brush
  • a putty knife
  • laundry detergent
  • a bottle of ammonia
  • a measuring cup
  • a vacuum
  • a pair of rubber gloves
  • a large stirring spoon
  • and an old toothbrush

Instructions for How to Strip Wax Buildup Off a Tile Floor

First, remove any pet food bowls or area rugs that are on the floor.

Then, vacuum up any dust, crumbs, and loose dirt on the floor.

Next, after putting on your rubber gloves, create your own homemade wax stripping solution by pouring one cup of laundry detergent, one cup of ammonia, and one gallon of water into a large bucket.

Carefully stir the wax stripping solution together with a large mixing spoon.

Next, while starting at sections of the floor that are located furthest away from the exit of the room and working your way toward areas of the floor that are located closest to the exit of the room, apply the wax stripping solution with a mop to a small area of the floor and then allow the solution to sit and soften the wax buildup on the floor for approximately 15 minutes.

Next, strip the wax away from each area on the floor that you cover using a stiff scrubbing brush and a putty knife until all of the wax buildup has been removed from that particular area of the floor.

Then, use your squeegee to scoop up the wax residue into a dust pan and throw the wax residue away in a garbage can.

Finishing the Removal of the Wax Buildup

Finally, as you continue to strip each section of the floor, use an old toothbrush to scrub the nooks and crannies in the tiled surfaces until all of the wax buildup has been removed from that particular section of the floor.

And as added tip, only strip the wax on your tile floors about once a year and they'll always look great!
