Transcript:How to Properly Clean a ToiletHi, I'm Jennifer DeCristofano for About.com Home. One of the least favorite and most necessary household chores in the home is cleaning the toilet. Although this can be a daunting task, today I'm going to show you how to properly and painlessly clean the toilet in your home.
Tools Needed to Clean the ToiletFor this task, you're going to need:
- a pair of rubber gloves
- a cleaning sponge
- a toilet bowl brush
- powder or liquid toilet cleaner
- disinfectant spray
Prepare the Bathroom and ToiletBefore getting started, you'll want to open the bathroom window or turn on a fan so you have good ventilation while working with household cleaners.
After putting on your rubber gloves, press down and release the flushing lever on the toilet tank to flush away any waste and to wet the inside edges of the bowl.
Apply the Toilet CleanerOnce the toilet has completed the flushing cycle, apply a generous amount of powder or liquid toilet cleaner to the inside edges of the toilet bowl. It's important to make sure you get plenty of cleaner along the sides and under the rim of the bowl, and not just in the water.
Clean the Toilet BowlUsing the toilet brush, swab and scrub all around the interior of the bowl. While scrubbing, make sure that you scrub beneath the rim of the toilet bowl and the area at the water line. These are the areas where most bacteria build up inside the toilet bowl.
Once the bowl has been thoroughly scrubbed, flush the toilet again to rinse the cleaner and grime out of the toilet bowl. If you're still not satisfied with the cleanliness of your toilet, repeat this process until the toilet bowl is clean.
Clean the Toilet Bowl BrushOnce the bowl is sparkling clean, flush the toilet again so you can quickly clean your toilet bowl brush by shaking it off in the incoming water of the toilet bowl.
Clean the Rest of the ToiletFinally, using your disinfectant spray and sponge, spray and wipe down the top of the toilet seat, the underside of the toilet lid, the underside of the toilet seat, and the top rim of the toilet bowl.
Once the inside and the seat are clean, wipe down the outside of the toilet base, the top of the toilet lid, and the top of the tank with disinfectant. Allow the disinfectant to dry before using the toilet.
So there you have it. The royal throne is clean and smelling fresh again.
