Hi! I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com!Allergies to dust mites in the bedroom can generally leave you feeling unhappy each morning after waking up from these small little critters taking over your nice warm bed at night. So today, I'm going to cover a few tips on things you can do to get your dust mite allergies back under control at home!
Organic Cotton Mattress Covers
The first thing you want to do is use organic cotton covers on your mattress and pillows to prevent dust mites from entering your bedding at night.Wash Linens in Hot Water
Next, wash all bed linens in hot water on a weekly basis to kill dust mites and eggs that might be living in your bed linens.Keep Pets Off the Furniture
For households with pets, always make sure the pets stay off the bed and close bedroom doors to keep the bedroom off limits to your animals.Kill Kill Dust Mite Eggs
Next, each week, alternate placing stuffed animals and cloth toys in re-sealable plastic bags and stick them in the freezer for a few days to kill any dust mites or eggs that are lingering in the toys.Purify the Air
To breath easier, use air purifiers to reduce the number of airborne pollutants in the home, because most will remove particles as small as .3 microns and this includes dust mites.Don't Make Your Bed
Finally, if you're looking for a great reason to no longer make your bed first thing in the morning, remember to avoid making your bed first thing in the morning by turning back the covers to give any moisture built up in the bed at night a chance to evaporate and open windows so that the sunlight will kill the dust mites in your bedroom too! With these few dust mite allergy reduction tips, you're sure to feel better no time!
