Hi, I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com. Wool rugs are beautiful for covering large surfaces in the home, however, water soluble soda stains can ruin a wool rug quickly if it isn't cleaned properly. So today, I'm going to show you how to properly clean a water soluble soda stain on a wool rug.

What You Need to Clean a Soda Stain

For this task, you will need a roll of paper towels, a bottle of club soda (carbonated water), and a vacuum.

First, for best results, always clean soda stains on the wool rug as soon as the spill happens.

Blog Excess Soda

Starting at the outside of the soda stain spill and working your way toward the center of the spill, use clean paper towels to carefully blot up the excess soda on the rug.

Do this by carefully pushing the paper towel flat down onto the stained area of the rug and then lift the paper towel straight up again as the paper towel soaks up the soda spill.

When blotting the stain, replace each damp and dirty paper towel with a fresh clean and dry paper towel as needed. Continue to blot and lift up the soda stain on the rug with the paper towels until the majority of the soda stain has lifted from the wool rug.

Pour Club Soda on Stain, and Blot

Next, pour a healthy amount of club soda on a clean paper towel and then continue blotting the stained area on the rug until the stain has completely lifted from the rug.

Then, carefully blot the stained area again with a dry paper towel to soak up any excess moisture in the rug until the previously stained area on the rug feels relatively dry to the touch.

Vacuum Excess Moisture

Finally, use your vacuum to slowly vacuum over the previously stained area on the rug to soak up any remaining moisture in the wool rug. And the best thing about club soda is that it doesn't leave a residue on the rug, so you can use it for any kind of water soluble stain that might happen on your wool rug, so long as you make sure to dry it quickly.
