Transcript:Overview of the Grinch

Hi, I'm Carissa Loethen for About.com and today we will profile The Grinch - a fictional character created by Doctor Seuss.

Profile of The Grinch

Dr. Seuss created the Grinch in his 1957 children's book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The Grinch is a creature with an unpleasant , even grouchy attitude. He has a green furry body with a wrinkly face and a nose similar to a dog. He hates Christmas, which spawned his iconic relationship with the holidays.

The Grinch lives north of Whoville, a village full of 'Whos'. 'Whos' are creatures similar to humans but have long snouts and twelve toes. The Grinch lives in a cave on the fictional mountain Mt. Crumpit with his dog, Max.

"The Grinch" Movie

Jim Carrey played the non-animated role of the Grinch in the 2001 movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. In Whoville, the merry residents shop and decorate with frenzy for the holidays. However, to the North of town, the Grinch watches over the city with loathing. But that's where the movie departs from Suess' book.

The Grinch eventually gets so angry he sets the town hall's Christmas tree on fire. He then steals all the presents from Whoville on Christmas Day. The residents then consider their relationship with the Grinch and the meaning of the holidays. The rest of the story falls in place with the book and they all end up happy together.

The Grinch Television Special

In 1966, Chuck Jones made the book into an animated television special, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The special was less than an hour in length and airs around Christmas time every year. It was the first time the story was told in color, as the book was produced in red and black ink.

Other Grinch Stories

In 1977, the television special became so popular that a prequel was created called Halloween is Grinch Night. The movie featured the Grinch coming to Whoville to scare all of the Whos every Halloween.
