Transcript:What Is Blu-Ray?
Hi! This is Tom Knight for About.com. Today, we're here to talk about what is Blu-Ray.
What is Blu-Ray?
Blu-Ray is the high-definition video disc standard in the world. It beat out HD-DVD in 2008. Basically, it's a high-capacity disc-based format. It's the same physical size as a DVD, but it holds a lot more information.
How is a Blu-Ray Different than a DVD?
A Blu-Ray uses a blue laser instead of a red laser. A blue laser has a much narrower beam than a red laser. On a disc, data is stored in pits. If you have smaller pits, then you can fit more data. The Blu-Ray laser is narrow enough to read those tiny pits. DVDs can hold 4.7 gigabytes per layer, compared to Blu-Rays, which can hold 25 gigabytes per layer. Dual layer Blu-Rays are now available, and theoretically, there can be even more layers.
How Much Capacity Do Blu-Ray Discs Have?
Blu-Rays can support high resolution of up to 1080p progressive, which means that you're going to see a much clearer picture than anything else commercially available. It also allows you to store HD content in 3D. There is so much more storage on a Blu-Ray that it allows for much greater audio fidelity. You can have up to 8 tracks of uncompressed audio on a Blu-Ray. Dolby Digital, DTS, and Uncompressed PCM are standard on Blu-Ray.
Recordable Blu-Rays, known as BD-Rs or BD-RE erasable discs, are widely available, and they're mostly used for data storage in computer systems. Blu-Ray players are made by most major electronics manufacturers. Sony, which originated the format, uses the format in its Playstation 3.
Blu-Ray and Downloadable and Streamed Content
Blu-Rays may the last major disc format since downloadable and streamed content is taking over the media. But Blu-Ray is still increasing in popularity, probably because it has the highest quality audio and video of any option available today.
