Hello, I'm Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today we're discussing annual holidays and special days in November.

Veterans' Day Is an Important Federal Holiday in November

Veterans' Day is celebrated on November 11. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, there were cheers of celebration, for the war to end all wars, the armistice was signed. And one year later on November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was celebrated. In 1938, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans' Day, a federal holiday, which honors all veterans from all wars. You might take this time to sit down with your homeschool children and make some care packages, write letters to soldiers, and thank veterans for their service to this country.

Thanksgiving Is an Important Family Holiday in November

And the fourth Thursday of the month is the day we celebrate a day of Thanksgiving. It's a good time to get creative with arts and crafts projects with your kids. Print out some coloring pages and color them in, find some pumpkins and get to carving, or find some fall leaves on the ground. You can do some tracings or use those fall leaves as part of a craft.

JFK's Assassination Is a Special Day in November

November 22 is the day we commemorate the assassination of JFK, or John F. Kennedy, our 35th United States president. He was shot and killed November 22, 1963, in Dealy Plaza, Dallas, Texas. It's time to sit with your kids and talk not only about the assassination, but the history of our 35th president, up to that date the youngest president of the United States.

Famous Birthdays in November

There are also some famous birthdays in the month of November. For example, Marie Curie, born November 7, 1867, the famous Polish-French physicist and chemist, famous for her research and productivity in the field of radiation.

Square Dance Day Is a Fun Special Day in November

And have a little fun on November 29, which is Square Dance Day. Not only can you teach the kids some interesting facts about square dancing, its history, as well as the caller, who directs the square dance, you can also make it a time for exercise.
