Transcript:Annual Holidays and Special Days in March

Hi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for, and today we'll discuss special days and annual holidays in March. It's time to think about those special holidays that only happen once a year, every year, in March.

St. Patrick's Day Is an Annual Holiday in March

For example, St. Patrick's Day, which happens on March 17th. It celebrates the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, and it's typically honored by wearing something green, going to a parade, or celebrating Irish heritage.

If you're homeschooling, it's a perfect time to celebrate Irish Heritage Month, which is the entire month of March. And you can look up Irish History, do a quiz about St. Patrick himself, or the color green.

Daylight Savings Time Is a Special Day in March

March is not just a month of holidays but a month of special dates such as Daylight Savings Time, which is always the second Saturday of March. It's time when we turn that clock back an hour and add a little more daylight to our summer.

The Vernal Equinox Is Another Special Day in March

Another special day is the vernal equinox, or the first day of spring, which is commonly March 20th or March 21st. That's when you can see the sun directly overhead. Thinking about the topic of spring and the month of March leads us directly into celebrating spring with our homeschool kids, so take the time to print out some coloring pages and have some fun teaching about spring and the seasons.

Easter Is an Annual Religious Holiday That Often Falls in March

And don't forget religious holidays, such as Easter. Often times, Easter falls in March, although sometimes in April, and that's when we celebrate the end of forty days of fasting, prayer and penance -- the forty days of Lent.

Other Important Celebrations in March

March is also time for nationally recognized holidays that celebrate the entire month of March, such as National Craft Month. It's also time for fun celebrations such as National Noodle Month, and get back to the books with Women's History. It's National Women's History Month, so take the time to celebrate.
