Transcript: Install a Bathroom Cabinet

Hi! I'm Ami Young with About.com Home.

Do I Need a New Bathroom Cabinet

Today I'm going to show you how to mount an extra storage cabinet on drywall in your bathroom. This approach is especially useful if you have a relatively small bathroom with little room for stand-alone storage units.

What You Need to Install a Bathroom Cabinet

For this project, you will need:
  1. A small wall-mountable cabinet
  2. A Number 2 Pencil
  3. Drywall Anchor Bolts or Screws (that are weighted to hold up to 50 lbs)
  4. A Phillips Head Screw Driver
  5. A Hammer
  6. And a long Flat Head Nail

Install a Bathroom Cabinet

First, I'm just going to lift this up against the wall and get it squared up to where I'm going to want to mount it.

Next use your number 2 pencil to outline where the holes align on the wall. Now, take the cabinet back down. I need to figure out if there is a wood stud behind the drywall or just air.

To figure this out, take your Nail and hammer it into the center of your drill hole mark on both marks on the wall. Hammer the nail into the drywall just half way in. If you hit a wood stud behind the wall, youll notice the nail suddenly becoming more difficult to hammer in. In this case, you would only need a screw and not an anchor bolt. But, if the nail easily punches into the drywall with very little resistance, then you're going to need to use an anchor bolt for that hole so your cabinet doesn't fall off the wall.

Now that we've determined where we need an anchor bolt and where we only need a screw, screw in an anchor to the holes where you have drywall only. Twist clockwise with your Phillips Head Screwdriver until the anchor is flush with the surface of the wall.

Next, lift your cabinet back up to the wall, align the screw holes and screw in both of the screws about half-way each. Then, once you have both screws lined up and started into the wall, tighten each screw clockwise until each is locked into position.

There! Beautiful!
