Transcript:How to Install a Phone JackHi my name is Danielle Lessovitz for about.com and today I'm going to show you how to fix a broken phone jack. Can I actually call you back? Phone jacks don't just magically appear on walls, they need to be installed. And today I'm going to show you how to do just that.
Phone Jack Installation SuppliesHere's what you will need:
- a screwdriver
- wire cutters
- a new phone jack
Remove the Old Phone JackFirst, we'll want to remove the old phone jack. To do this, take your screwdriver and loosen the two screws, remove the phone jack.
Phone Jack WiresReach your hand inside the wall and pull out the wires. The four main colors you will be looking for are red, green, yellow and black. These four colors correspond with the colors on the back of your phone jack.
Repair the Phone Jack WiresIf your wires are chipped or bent beyond repair, you may want to cut them and expose a new contact area, to do this take your wire cutters and clamp down strongly on the insulated portion of the wire. To strip the wire, position your wire cutters two inches from the tip of the wire and clamp down with half the force you used to cut the wire. Slide the wire cutter forward and the insulation should be removed. Cut and strip all necessary wires.
Install the New Phone JackTurn your new phone jack over, and with your screwdriver, loosen each screw on the back. Now you'll want to connect each colored wire with its respective color on the phone jack. To do this, position the tip of the wire between the head of the screw and the base of the jack. Secure the wire by tightening the screw. Continue connecting the wires for each color. Make sure your wires are securely attached to the phone jack. Stuff the wires back into the phone jack, line up the hole of the telephone jack with the wall socket, and attach the screws.
I use this phone jack for the internet so I'm going to put in the adapter than the telephone line. www.about.com and it works, now I can watch more videos. To learn more, please visit us on the web at homegarden.about.com .
