Hi, I am Denise Willard with Decor by Denise and today I am going to discuss with you how to green your bedroom. All the hours you sleep in your bedroom and breathe and the toxins found in your paint, your carpet, your firebox and your furnishings really do add up. So today, I am going to discuss with you three simple things that you can do to really cut down on all those toxins.
Focus on Indoor Air Quality to Green Your Bedroom
The first idea is to focus on your indoor air quality and there are really three things that you can do here. First, instead of opting for furniture that's made out of particle board and/or plywood, which give off gas, some aldehyde, look at more eco-friendly options. There are a lot of manufacturers out there who are using reclaimed wood in their furniture pieces and also switching out to glues that are more eco-friendly.
The second way to improve your indoor air quality is to select paints that have low or no VOCs. You might say what's a VOC? A VOC is a volatile organic compound. It is something that's emitted after the paint is applied to your walls and is extremely toxic to your body. And I always recommend the Natura line from Benjamin Moore, because it is a truly a no-VOC paint that doesn't harm you or the environment and gives you lots of great options for color.
The third way to improve your indoor air quality is to trade in synthetic linens and mattresses which contain petroleum based products for things that are more organic, like organic cotton, organic bamboo, things like that. So when you are looking at options, think natural.
Focus on Lighting to Green Your Bedroom
The second idea for greening your bedroom is to focus on your lighting. Instead of using harsh overhead light, opt for natural lighting like the light you see outside your window and/or task lighting. If you have a small space, one of the ways to really compensate for the lack of space is to use light colored walls and use mirrors to reflect the natural light and it's always a great idea to install dimmers so you can create some natural ambience.
Choose Natural Flooring to Green Your Bedroom
When it comes to flooring choices for the bedroom, the two most common options are carpet and wood floors. If you go to the carpet rug, select one that contains recycled content or is made from natural materials, such as jute or sisal. Choose wood flooring that is salvaged or made with FSC certified wood or bamboo. And just remember if you've got well placed rugs, they'll make your bedroom feel much cozier.
These green decorating ideas are not only easy to implement, but inexpensive. Ultimately, your bedroom should not only be comfortable, but also healthy. Thanks for watching!
