Transcript: How to Choose Sandpaper

Hey, Steve Crider here for About.com Home and Garden. To get truly professional results with your project, you may need to do a little sanding.

Sandpaper Grit

There are many different kinds of sandpaper. The easiest way to classify sandpaper is by grit. Grit describes how rough the surface is, and it's represented by a number on the back of the paper. For example this is 80 grit - the lower the number, the rougher the surface.

Choosing Sandpaper

There are two questions you ask yourself when picking sandpaper: Where do you start and where do you stop? Well if you're going to paint something like this chair, sand it to about 150 grit. If you're staining something like this guitar body, you may want to go to 200 or 220.

Sandpaper Safety

And one last thing - don't forget those safety glasses and respirator. Protect those eyes and lungs.
