Transcript:How to Make Cranberry Sauce

Hi, I am Gretchen Siegchrist for about.com Food, and I am going to show you how to make cranberry sauce using fresh cranberries. I have always been a big fan of canned cranberry sauce, but after learning this simple method I find myself making it from scratch more and more.

Cranberry Sauce Ingredients:

The basic ingredients for homemade cranberry sauce are:
1 cup of water
1 cup of sugar
and 12 oz. fresh or frozen cranberries

This makes a great simple sauce, but you can also jazz it up with a splash of fresh lemon or orange juice, or chopped pecans or walnuts.

How to Make Cranberry Sauce:

To begin, rinse the cranberries and get rid of any that do not look quite up to snuff. Next, boil the water on the stove. When the water is boiling, add the sugar and let it dissolve. Next, add the cranberries, turn the heat down to medium high, and let the cranberries cook for 20 minutes or so, stirring occasionally. The berries will pop open and form a jelly-like consistency by the time they are done cooking. At this point, remove the sauce from the heat, add whatever extras you would like, and let it cool to room temperature.

When the cranberry sauce is cool, put it in another container, cover it, and store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use.

This is a great addition to Thanksgiving dinner, and I hope that you enjoy it. Thanks for watching, and to learn more, visit us on the web at food.about.com.
