Transcript:Tips for Roasting a Turkey

Hi! I'm Cathy Straub for About.com. Today I'm going to share with you some tips for roasting a successful turkey.

Prevent the Turkey from Drying Out

Use poultry lacers to attach the wings to the turkey so that they do not cook to quickly or over brown. A good way to prevent your turkey from over browning or drying out during the roasting process is to make use of an oven roasting bag. The oven roasting bag eliminates the need for basting during cooking and significantly reduces your cooking time. Make sure you remove the giblets from the turkey before you roast it.

Cooking Time Depends on the Turkey's Weight

Your roasting time depends on the size of your bird. The times range from two hours for a six pound unstuffed bird, to six hour for a twenty-four pound unstuffed bird. If using a roasting bag, your cooking time will be anywhere between two to three and a half hours depending on the size of the bird which will cut your cooking time in half.

Check the Temperature of the Turkey

Its extremely important that your turkey is thoroughly cooked, and you must insure that it has reached an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees. You can check this by using and instant read thermometer and inserting it into the breast of the turkey as long as its not touching the bone.
