Transcript:Party Breadsticks

Hi, I'm Rachel Edelman for About.com Food. Today I'm going to show you how to make party breadsticks.

Breadstick Ingredients

For this recipe, you will need:
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.

Combine the Ingredients

In a large saucepan, combine the butter, water, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil. When the butter is melted, gradually add the flour and baking powder, and stir with a wire whisk.

Keep cooking until the mixture starts to pull away from the sides of the pan. Remove from the heat, and then stir in the buttermilk, egg, and Parmesan cheese.

Roll Out the Dough

If the dough is too wet, continue to add flour until it's easy to handle and roll. Then transfer the dough to a smooth surface.

Remove a small chunk, and roll it into a six-inch log, about one inch wide. You should be able to make about 12 logs.

Cover the Dough With Sesame Seeds

Take the sesame seeds, and pour them in a shallow dish. Take each log and roll it around in the seeds so it's coated on all sides. Next, place logs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Other Topping Ideas

Instead of sesame seeds, you could roll the sticks in salt or poppy seeds. Another option is to brush the sticks with melted butter and top with fresh herbs such as rosemary, oregano, or parsley.

For a garlic roll, melt butter with minced garlic and generously coat before baking.

Bake and Serve the Breadsticks

Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the sticks are golden brown. Serve with some dipping oil and enjoy.
