Transcript:How to Make Eggnog

Hi, I'm Gretchen Siegchrist for About.com Food, and I am going to show you how to make eggnog. This rich, creamy drink is a classic around the holidays, but it can be enjoyed any time of the year.

Eggnog Ingredients

For this recipe, you need:
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup rum
  • 1 cup whiskey
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • nutmeg
This recipe uses raw eggs, so be sure to keep the drink cool at all times. If you want to make non-alcoholic eggnog, simply substitute milk for the alcohol.

Mix Eggnog Ingredients to Egg Yolks

Begin by separating the eggs. In a large bowl, mix together the egg yolks and the salt. Slowly add half a cup of sugar to the egg yolks, mixing until they are light and fluffy. Add the rum, whiskey, milk, vanilla, and 1/2 cup of cream to the eggs.

Beat the Egg Whites

Now we will set this mixture aside and beat the egg whites. Beat the whites until they are stiff and then add the remaining quarter cup of sugar. Clean off the beaters and whip the remaining half cup of cream.

Fold the Eggnog Ingredients

Fold the egg whites into the milk mixture and then gently fold in the whipped cream. Transfer the drink to a punch bowl and serve it in glass cups. You can sprinkle some nutmeg on the top for garnish and a little extra flavor.
