Transcript:Decorate an American Flag CakeHi, I am Carrie Wise for About.com Food, and today I am going to show you how to decorate a flag cake.
Now, this dessert is perfect for the Fourth of July, and it is quite patriotic.
Ingredients Needed to Decorate a Flag CakeFirst, you will need:
- a sheet cake
- cool whipped topping
- 1 pint blueberries
- 1 pint strawberries
Make the Sheet CakeStart with the cake. I recommend a white or yellow cake. You can use a box mix or your favorite cake recipe. Prepare the cake as directed, and let it cool.
Once the cake has completely cooled, you can go ahead and take it out of the pan and flip it over onto a baking sheet or serving dish.
Ice the Cake With Whipped ToppingFor the icing, I recommend using cool whipped topping, but you could also use store-bought frosting or your own homemade recipe.
Go ahead and take a rubber spatula and the whipped topping, and you can begin to ice. Put the topping on top of the cake.
I recommend starting in the center and working your way out to the sides. You can ice the sides of the cake by pushing some of the topping down.
Wash and Slice the BerriesYou will need one pint of strawberries and one pint of blueberries for the decorations. Be sure to wash and dry them first.
Go ahead and cut the strawberries in half so you have two flat sides.
Place the Blueberries on the CakeNow we are ready to decorate. We will start with the stars, a.k.a. blueberries. Start at the upper left hand corner of the cake.
Start by aligning the blueberries in little rows. Put down five blueberries in a row, making five rows total.
Place the Strawberries on the CakeNow we are ready for the strawberries, or should I say stripes. Go ahead and place in rows just like we did the blueberries.
Chill and Serve the Flag CakePut the cake into the refrigerator until you are ready to serve it.
Now that you know how to decorate a flag cake, be sure to try this at home. It is fun, it is easy, and it sure it tasty.
