Hello I am Pandit Vinod Dave for About.com. I’m here to explain what a bhajan is.
Bhajan are Hindu Devotional Songs
What is a bhajan? Bhajan’s are simple songs in a soulful language expressing the many soulful expressions of love for God in complete submission or self surrender to him through singing. Bhajans are very important because they remove stress, they help you relax, and it’s a social phenomenon. And the history of bhajans. Bhajans are used to sing, individually or in a group.
They are different than shlokas. Shlokas are used in a religious ceremony, like marriage, entering a new business, or going on a journey to know the blessings of a heavenly God. And a bhajan is more of a devotional song.
Popular Bhajan Composers
And bhajans were made popular by Mahatma Ghandi. He held daily evening prayers where bhajans were sung and thousands of people joined. Some of the very, very well known composers were Tulsidas, Meera Bai, Kabir, and Suldas. These were very famous composers and singers of bhajans.
Suldas did not have eyes and still he composed thousands of bhajans. Kabir was also immensely popular. And also Meera Bai. She was a Queen and she sang bhajans of Krishna and they are very, very famous. And in many films also her bhajans were sung. And Tulsidas, a revered poet and composer, who had composed thousands and thousands of bhajans that people sing and then they are able to unite with the divine by singing those bhajans composed by Tulsidas, Meera Bai, Kabir and Suldas.
