Transcript:How to Treat Respiratory Problems with TulsiHi, I'm Jen D'Amore for About.com and this video is all about how to use Tulsi to treat respiratory problems.
Tulsi is a Traditional Medicine with a Long HistoryTulsi, also known as Holy Basil, is praised by many for its healing properties, mostly due to the hundreds of phytochemicals it contains, that together support health in a variety of ways, including helping the body adapt to stress, cleansing, and relieving congestion. Ayruveda, the traditional medicine practice of India, suggests making a decoction of tulsi leaves to treat respiratory distress, including bronchitis, asthma, influenza, cough, and cold.
Use Tulsi to Brew Curative TeasTo make a Tulsi decoction boil the leaves, and a few slices of ginger, in half of a liter of water until only half of the water is left. This will extract the essence of the Tulsi leaves into the liquid. Add honey, and allow it to cool slightly before drinking. You can take the decoction two or three times per day.
To treat influenza, you can make a similar decoction with Tulsi leaves, cloves, and salt. Of course, if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or you're on any medication, talk to your doctor before using Tulsi. Tulsi can be found in many forms: leaves, essential oil, juice, and tea. Incorporating Tulsi into your daily routine is a great way to boost your immune system, and practice preventative medicine.
