Transcript:How to Cover a Pumpkin in Glitter

Hi. I'm Krystyna Rittichier with About.com, and today I'll show you how to cover a pumpkin in glitter. This project can be used on a real pumpkin, or on a fake pumpkin for a decoration that will last for years to come.

Materials for a Glittered Pumpkin

For a glittered pumpkin you will need:

  • 1 Fresh or fake pumpkin
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Newspaper
  • Mod Podge or other liquid adhesive that dries clear
  • Paint brush
  • Glitter
  • Grayish Brown Acrylic paint
  • Decorative Wired Ribbon

How to Make a Glitter Pumpkin

To prep the pumpkin, start by wiping the surface down very well with rubbing alcohol on a paper towel. Prepare a work space with several layers of newspaper, and place the pumpkin on the paper. Place the pumpkin on its side, and apply generous amounts of glue to one half of the pumpkin. Be sure to do the curve of the base so you can't see orange at the bottom. While you are applying glue, do not worry about the top yet, because it will be difficult to apply glitter to the top while the pumpkin is on its side. Sprinkle generous amounts of glitter onto the glue.

Allow the glue to dry for 1 hour before shaking off excess glitter. Repeat these steps with the other half of the pumpkin. While you are working, turn the pumpkin carefully by gently lifting the pumpkin by the dry side to turn it. This will prevent damage to the finished side of the pumpkin as you work.

How to Finish Covering a Pumpkin in Glitter

Turn the pumpkin onto its base. Paint the stem before you add glitter to the top of the pumpkin. Begin with the base of the stem, working carefully so you don't get paint on the pumpkin. Apply the acrylic paint to the rest of the stem, using a tapping motion with the brush to ensure that the paint works into the creases of the stem. Don't forget to paint the cut end. Allow the paint to dry for 10 minutes. Now you can finish applying glitter to the top of the pumpkin. Allow the glue to dry for 1 hour. Shake excess glitter off the pumpkin, then tie ribbon on the stem and make a bow. Your pumpkin is now finished!
