Hi, My name is Jesse Blanchard for About.com and I am going to show you how to replace an old toilet like this with a new low flush toilet. This can save enough water to pay for itself in a year. This task is surprisingly easy. Let's get started.Supplies to Install Low Flush Toilets
To do this task you will need:Installing Low Flush Toilets
First, turn the water off at the supply valve, then flush the toilet to empty the tank. Sponge the remaining water out of the tank and the bowl. Disconnect the water supply line, and remove the tank bolts.Once you have the bolts off, lift up to remove the tank. Next remove the floor bolts. Now rock the bowl back and forth to break the wax seal. Then using both knees, lift the bowl up. Now take the rag and use it to stop up the hole to prevent sewer gasses from wafting up.
Scrape up any remaining wax with your putty knife. Lay the toilet upside down and put your new wax ring on the base. Remove the rag, and take your toilet and put it right side up and guide it carefully over the bolts. Then push it into place.
Now tighten the bolts down on both sides, alternating back and forth as you go. Lower the tank down into place and tighten the tank bolts.
Reconnect the water supply line and finish by sealing the bottom edge.
Now that you've finished installing your toilet you'll want to give it a test run to make sure there are no leaks.
