Transcript:How to Make Powdered SugarPowdered sugar is the basis for all sorts of delectable treats, from frostings to certain cookies to brownies. But there's no need to buy powdered sugar when it's a cinch to make it from scratch.
Hi I'm Stephanie Gallagher for About.com, and today, we're making powdered sugar from scratch. Let's get started.
Ingredients for Powdered SugarFor this recipe, you will need:
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- and 1 to 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
Instructions for Making Powdered SugarI'm using a food processor to make this powdered sugar. But you could also use a coffee grinder or even a blender.
Start by pouring the sugar into the food processor. Pulse it for several minutes to grind it finely.
When the sugar is very finely ground, add the cornstarch. Then process again until the sugar becomes powdery. You'll start to see what looks like puffs of smoke -- it's actually your sugar -- coming from the food processor when it's ready.
Here's the texture we're looking for.
Now you can use this powdered sugar to make frosting for cupcakes or other treats and even for sprinkling on berries and special breakfast recipes.
That's all for today. For more great recipes just like this one, join us on the web at About.com.
