Transcript:How to Make a Homemade Gyro

Hi I'm Joyce for About.com. Today I'm going to show you how to make a homemade gyro. 

Mix Gyro Seasoning in a Bowl

First we're going to start with the gyro seasoning. Mix three tablespoons of sea salt, 1 1/2 teaspoons of sweet paprika, 1/4 teaspoon of pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of crushed oregano in a bowl.

Combine Gyro Tzatziki Sauce Ingredients

Next we're going to make the white sauce, also known as tzatziki. Combine 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of vinegar, 2 cloves of minced garlic, half a teaspoon of salt, and a quarter teaspoon of pepper. In another bowl, combine one cup of greek yogurt and one cup of sour cream. After it's well mixed, add the olive oil mixture, 2 diced cucumbers, and 1 teaspoon of freshly chopped dill. Mix it all together and chill it for at least 2 hours before serving.

Cook Gyro Meat and Grill Pita Bread

Now on to the meat. Take 2 - 3 pounds of chicken breast, pounded, and thinly sliced, and cook it in a medium pan. Add a fair amount of gyro seasoning to the chicken and cook for 10 - 15 minutes or until chicken is fully cooked.

In a separate pan, grill a piece of pita bread 2 minutes on each side in low heat. When ready, add the chicken, a tablespoon of white sauce, slices of tomato and onions, wrap it up and serve. As an alternative to chicken, you can also use beef, pork, or lamb.
