Everyone has a few digital photos that could stand a touch-up or two. You can alter your photos in Picasa, a free Google program. Learn how to use Picasa effects and tuning.

Hi, I'm Don Schechter for About.com Computing. Today, I will show you how to use the effects and tuning features in Picasa 2. Picasa is a free photo organization, editing, and sharing tool you can download from Google.

Get Started in Picasa

  • OPEN Picasa
  • DOUBLE-CLICK on picture to adjust
  • CLICK on Basic Fixes, Tuning or Effects (left sidebar) to edit and add to your photo
  • CLICK the Undo and Redo button at the bottom of the tab at anytime

Straighten Photos With Picasa

  • CLICK Basic Fixes
  • CLICK the Straighten button
  • ADJUST the slide bar below the photo

Auto-Fix Color, Lighting, and Contrast

  • CLICK Basic Fixes
  • CLICK I'm Feeling Lucky button
  • CLICK Auto Contrast button
  • CLICK Auto Color to brighten color
  • ADJUST Fill Light slide bar (below the buttons) to adjust the photo's light.

Picasa Tuning

  • CLICK Tuning on left sidebar
  • ADJUST fill light, highlights, shadows and color temperature sliders
  • CLICK the wands to the right of the sliders for automatic color and light fixes
  • CLICK Neutral Color Picker to pick a neutral gray or white part of the photo to remove color cast

Picasa Effects

  • There are twelve options to choose from and combine. Select the ones you like.
