Transcript: Create a Black and White Effect in Adobe Photoshop
Hi, I'm Don Schechter for About.com Computing.Today I'll show you how to create a partial black and white photo using Photoshop Elements. This would also work in Photoshop. This is a great feature to make your photos more professional and they make great gifts.
Choose Picture for Photoshop Elements
First open Photoshop Elements. Go to File, Open to choose the photo you would like to adjust. Click ok.Add Layer in Photoshop Elements
To make the picture black and white but still retain the color underneath we will create an adjustment layer so that the black and white layer can be erased and the color will shine through where you want it. Go to Layer, New Adjustment Layer, and choose Gradient Map. A window will appear. Click OK and another window will appear.Photoshop Elements Black and White Effect
Change the gradient to a black and white gradient using the drop down menu, then click OK. To reveal color, zoom in to the area you want and choose an appropriate brush size at the top menu. On the left side bar change the foreground color to black. Click OK. Select the adjustment layer in your layers palette on the right side and being to paint in your color. Don t panic if you go outside the lines.Smoothing Black and White Edges
To clean up the edges, simply change the background color to white and paint over the parts that should be black and white. It helps to Zoom in and use smaller brush sizes.Once you re done, Zoom out to 100% and see if your edges are too sharp. To soften them, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set the Blur radius between 1 and 2 pixels.
