Why DeAge in Photoshop?

The minor touching up of wrinkles, blemishes and other unwanted facial features is a quick and easy way to reduce the effects that aging can have on the subject of a shot. And let's face it, no one these days is going to complain about appearing a little younger.

Healing Tools in Adobe Photoshop CS5

Adobe CS5 has an updated set of healing tools that can be used specifically for this purpose. The healing tools are the first set of tools available in the painting section of the tool bar.

Spot Healing in Photoshop

The default tool in this set is the spot healing brush. This brush functions by sampling the pixels surrounding the location you click on. You can increase or decrease the size of the spot using the open and closed brackets. A larger spot selection will sample more and unify a larger area, while a more precision spot can be used for more detail to your finished edit. This tool is highly effective for removing blemishes and imperfections in skin complexion.

Getting Rid of Wrinkles in Photoshop

A non-automatic version of this is available in the form of the Healing tool. With the basic healing tool, a sample target has to be set by holding down the Option key and clicking in an area that you would like your edited section to resemble. This is a great tool for fixing wrinkles or discoloration, or removing an isolated item from a uniform background.

Patch Tool in Photoshop

The patch tool lets you click and drag to select an entire area of an image for editing. Once you have made a selection, simply click inside of it and drag to another similar area that will be used to replace the information from your original selection. That selection is compared to the surrounding pixels and the current existing pixels and then adjusted to make a nearly perfect photo replacement edit.

Clone Stamp Tool for Grey Hair

Another telltale sign of age in a photo is the creeping in of gray hairs. This issue can easily be corrected by employing the Clone Stamp tool. Similar to the Healing Brush, the clone stamp tools lets you select a target area by holding down the option key, and then using your sampled range to paint on new pixel information. So for gray hairs, simply Option+click in an area of hair with the color you desire, and paint it in over the gray. Sublet adjustments can be made to the brush tip itself to make the new painted on information blend more seamlessly into the image, but by utilizing the Clone Stamp, you can maintain a great deal of image detail.
