Transcript: How to Make a Strawberry Garnish

Hi, I'm Gretchen Siegchrist for About.com Food. Today, I'm going to show you how to make a strawberry garnish. This is a nice way to add a special touch to a dessert or a cheese plate.

Use a Wooden Spoon or Chopstick as a Guide

Making the garnish involves slicing the strawberry partway through, while still leaving it attached at the top. But this can be difficult to do because it is hard to know exactly how deep you want to go with the knife.

The trick is to use a wooden chopstick or the handle of a wooden spoon as a guide.

Cut the Strawberry

Place the strawberry stem-side down on a cutting board. Take the spoon and place it directly in front of the berry. Keeping the blade of the knife straight, cut through the strawberry until it hits the handle of the spoon.

By having the spoon there, you can make sure that your cut stops in exactly the same place every time.

Serve the Strawberry as Garnish

Continue making 1/8-inch slices through the rest of the strawberry. When you are done, just fan out the slices and you are ready to use the strawberry as garnish.
