Transcript:What Is the Neutral Grip?
I'm Todd Kolb for About.com. Let's talk about the neutral grip.
What Is the Neutral Grip?
When we look at a neutral grip in the golf swing, we're talking not only about the left hand, or the top hand for a right handed golfer, but also the bottom hand as well. So we're looking at both hands. Now, in a neutral grip the top hand which is going to be the left hand for those of us who are right-handed golfers, when we look down at our hand, from the address position we want to see two knuckles.
Create a Line With the Thumb for a Neutral Grip
So I'd see one, two. I also want to see the line that's formed between the thumb and the hand right here, kind of this crease, is going to point toward the right shoulder. So if I see the two knuckles, if I have the line here between the thumb and the hand going toward my right shoulder I now know that my left hand is in a neutral position.
Extend to the Shoulder for a Neutral Grip
In the right hand, or the bottom hand, I'm going to take that same line, or look for that same line between the thumb and the hand and I want that line to also go towards my right shoulder or be parallel to the one on my left.
Proper Positioning for the Neutral Grip
So once again in a neutral grip position, I'm looking for two knuckles on the left hand, the line formed between the thumb and the hand going towards the right shoulder, same thing on the bottom hand, the line here also going toward the right shoulder. If I have those three characteristics, I now know that I've created a neutral grip.
