Transcript:What Is Match Play?

Hey golfers this is Todd Kolb with About.com. We’re now going to talk about a match play format.

Match Play Format Pits Golfers Against Each Other

Match play is one of the main forms of competition in golf. It pits one player against another, rather one player against the field. Opponents compete to win individual holes. The player who wins the most holes, wins the match. Match play can be played by two individuals one on one, which is known as singles match play. Or teams of two can square off with foursomes play.

Match Play Can be a Team Golf Challenge

So in this format called match play you can play a couple different ways. It can be one person versus another person or you can also play in a team format where it can be two people versus another twosome. Today we are going to play in a singles match, match play format so it will be myself versus Alex.

Alex and I have just completed that hole in what we call a match play format. So in this particular example Alex had made a three and I had made a two, and so I had a lower score on that hole, and so I would win that hole in what we would call “one up” now going on to the next hole.
