Transcript:What Is Alternate Shot Competition?
Hey golfers this is Todd Kolb with About.com. Today we’re going to talk about a format called alternate shot.
Alternate Shot Golf Uses One Ball Alternately Played by Two Golfers
Alternate Shot is a competition format in which two person teams alternate hitting the same golf ball. The first player tees off, the second player hits the second shot, the first player hits the third shot, and so on until the ball is holed. Tee balls are alternated so that the same player doesn’t hit every drive.
Alternate Shot Rules Vary Between Golf Tournaments
Alternate shot can be played as a stroke play or match play format. When alternate shot is played as match play, it is also know as foursomes. So in the alternate shot format, it’s typically a two person team, so Alex and I are going to be a team here today and generally speaking in an alternate shot, one player will tee off on all the odd holes and the partner will tee off on all the even holes. Now this can vary a little bit from tournament to tournament and the committee will usually set the rules so sometimes it will be an alternate shot where I will tee off on all the odd holes, my partner will tee off on all the even. Or you might just play a straight alternate shot all the way through the round.
On this hole for our team I will be hitting the first shot. So I’ve just hit the tee shot for our team and we’ve come up and found it of course here and it will be Alex’s turn since she’s my partner on this particular format it will be her turn now to hit the second shot. Now it will be my turn to hit the third shot. Alright it’s time for our fourth shot and it’s Alex’s turn to hit. So we’ve just completed the hole in an alternate shot format. As a quick recap here it’s usually a team type of event, usually two person teams, your just going to alternate shots all the way through until you can complete the hole.
