Hi golfers, I'm Todd Kolb with About.com. We're going to talk about how to use a belly putter.

Instructions for Putting Using a Belly Putter

The belly putter is a great option for people if they've struggled with their putting; it's become pretty popular over the last couple of years. And there's a main reason people like the belly putter, it's because you can actually fix it to your body and create a pendulum motion a little bit easier than you can actually with a conventional style of putting.

More Instructions for Putting Using a Belly Putter

First of all, lets talk about how we set up using the belly putter. As the word describes, belly, the putter actually fits into the midrange of the stomach area. Any good putting motion swings upon a spot we'll call the anchor spot. Now when we use the belly putter, that anchor spot is attached to the body, and the reason this is important is because it can take the hands and the wrist out of the motion and I can swing the putter, or pendulum the putter using just my arms and my shoulders. So, once again you are going to anchor the putter kind of into the mid-section.

Additional Instructions for Putting Using a Belly Putter

Now, how we go about placing our hands on there, there's a couple different ways you can do this. You can use the conventional grip that you use for all of your shots, which would look something like this. You could even use a modified putting grip that you might use, or a very common thing that a lot of people do who use a belly putter, is they use what we call a left hand low style or cross-handed style where their lead hand, there left hand for me is a little bit lower and that's a pretty common way that people will use the belly putter. So it allows you to swing the putter back and forth in a nice rhythmic motion, and certainly is an option you should look at if you've struggled with your putting in the past.
