Transcript:How to Play the Chip-and-Run

I'm Todd Kolb with About.com. We're going to talk about the chip and run. When we talk about the chip and run we're talking about a shot where the ball is in the air for a short period of time and then it's rolling a long way. So, when I hit this particular shot, a couple things I want to do.

Information About Playing the Chip-and-Run

First of all, I want to grab a club that's going to allow me to do that. Now generally I'm going to recommend you use like a 7 iron or an 8 iron, a club that's going to hit the ball in the air a little bit and then going to allow it to roll quite a bit. When I go ahead and get set up I'm going to have my feet pretty close together in this shot, I'm going to have my weight a little bit on my left foot and the ball is going to be in the center of my stance or maybe back toward my right foot a little bit. In the execution of the shot the key to hitting this shot correctly is to make sure that I pick the club up and hit down on the golf ball a little bit. There's a definite descending motion as I hit this golf shot.

More About Playing the Chip-and-Run

So once again, I get set up, my feet are pretty close together. My weight's kind of on my left foot, the ball's in the center to little bit towards the right foot, I'm going to hit down on the golf ball, the golf ball's going to travel in the air just a short distance and then roll out to the cup. So a chip and run is a shot where the ball's on the ground most of the time, in the air only a short period of time, the club you're going to use is a 7 iron or an 8 iron, something like that, and it's a shot that you're going to need around the greens.
